Post Body:

Hey, Mom. I got diagnosed with C-PTSD this week. I wish I could tell you. But I know I can’t. I know it would turn into a fight.
I’d say, “I’ve been diagnosed with C-PTSD” and you’d say “What?? Why??” and I would have to tell you it’s because of the religion (more like a cult) that you raised me in. The religion you still deeply believe in.
You would be angry. You would deny it. You would tell me that I’ve been persuaded by the Devil. You would blame it on me being gay. You would call me wicked, a sinner, a stray lamb, a deceived child. You would compound my trauma.
No. I can’t tell you. But I wish I could. This is scary and destabilizing and I feel so overwhelmed. I just want my mom. I want to be held by my mom. I want to feel loved and validated. I want to hear you apologize and acknowledge that you have also been abused by our cult. And I want you to be strong enough to leave, too.
But that won’t happen, and that’s devastating.

exmormon also has some excellent support, which OP has already discovered. Nevermo here, but their stories help me recognize bad behavior and support those who've escaped. I've now subbed to exjw for the same reasons.

Hey there, not mom but a sibling a couple of years ahead of you. Left the cult and was diagnosed a couple of years ago.
I want you to know that things get better! I’m more stable than I have ever been in my life. Back then I just wanted to tell mom that I had to leave for my sanity. Now I wish I could tell her I’m finally sane for the first time in my life.
With therapy and finding others that understood where I was coming from (for me it was exjw) I have become the person I never thought I could be in this world, and I didn’t have to wait for god to fix my never ending sadness.
Diagnosis is a great first step in finding healing. I wish you all the best! If you ever need anyone to talk to I’m here. I found CBT and DBT therapies very helpful.

hugs do you know Jimmy Snow, Telltale and God is grey on youtube? JS grew up Mormon, T is ex JW and GiG is a progressive Christian who survived fundimentalism. They all talk about what they survived and advocate against these religious cult types. Jimmy is pansexual and often talks about his upbringing and how much he's healed and grown now away from all that. Its a very healing community you might be able to relate to them❤️

2020.10.28 19:27 SCOveterandretired GI Bill Court Case Results - Very Limited Information at this time

On June 11, 2020, Federal Circuit Court overturned VA rules regarding end-of-term benefit extensions in Carr vs Wilkie. VA is committed to helping Veterans and their families receive all the education benefits they are entitled to under the law. VA will pay more benefits because as we will now extend end-of-term benefits beyond 48 months. Prior to to this decesion, 48 months was a hard stop and benefits were never extended beyond 48 months. There is limited retroactive application and will only apply to cases decided within one year of date of decision: June 11, 2020. VA has begun the process of preparing procedures to implement this change that affects the administration of chapter 30 and 33 benefits (including the Fry Scholarship and STEM program benefits). We’re communicating with schools, students and VSOs to set expectations for this change. Schools and students may also can contact the Education Call Center for assistance at 1-888-442-4551 if they have any questions concerning this issue. For more information, go to
The above was put out on the Post 9/11 GI Bill VA Facebook Group - the link provides no information as of now - hopefully more will be posted soon.
Edit to add: Link to the Court Case -
This is not the Bo vs Wilke Case which there have been several news articles about - in that court case (still under appeal), the veteran served 2 different, separate periods of active duty and is requesting 36 months of MGIB and 36 months of Post 9/11 GI Bill. Several news articles have alleged that this "might" give veterans 12 additional months of GI Bill.
After reading this court case, this decision only applies to Post 9/11 GI Bill Transferred to Dependents, so will not affected Veterans. For the past 11 years, if a dependent exhausted the transferred entitlement during the semester, VA cut off the payments - with this court ruling, VA now has the authority to extend the dependents benefits through the end of that term the same as they already do for a veteran.
2nd Edit: VA just sent this out via email:
Dear GI Bill® Student,
On June 11, 2020, Federal Circuit Court overturned VA rules regarding end-of-term benefit extensions in Carr vs Wilkie.
In accordance with the Carr decision, VA will begin paying more benefits because we will now extend end-of-term benefits beyond 48 months. This ruling only applies to cases which have not been finally decided by VA; therefore, it will only apply to cases currently on appeal with the Board of Veterans Appeals or still appealable to VA (those decided within one year of date of decision: June 11, 2020).
To prepare for this outcome, VA has begun the process of preparing procedures to implement. We will be working with schools to make sure they understand this issue and can assist you through this process in a timely fashion. Tips for Success:
Plan ahead of time, ask questions Understand the impact this court decision has on you Be sure you understand your school’s procedures regarding this issue Get to know and stay in contact with your School Certifying Officials
Prior to Carr vs. Wilkie
Prior to Carr, VA viewed the 48-month rule as a hard stop and would never extend end-of-term benefits beyond 48 months. The court ruled that VA’s interpretation is incorrect and instead, VA should apply the 48-month rule to limit the initial award which will determine when benefits are exhausted and the point at which we should then apply the end-of-term extension (i.e., an end-of-term extension should not be stopped at the 48th month).
Example: Student has used 26 months under chapter 1606. He or she now applies for chapter 33 benefits. Entitlement to chapter 33 benefits is generally limited to 36 months of entitlement. However, application of the 48-month rule limits the award to 22 months of chapter 33 benefits. Therefore:
26 months of ch 1606 benefits used 36 months of ch 33 benefits entitled 48-26 = 22 months of chapter 33 will be awarded
If the student then uses 21 months of chapter 33 benefits (leaving only one month of entitlement remaining), and then starts a 4 month standard semester program, VA will pay benefits for the entire 4 months extending benefits by 3 months beyond the student’s actual award. This student will ultimately receive a combined total of 51 months of VA educational assistance.
For quarter or semester based program, VA will extend benefits to the end of the term. This means if a student has at least one day of benefits to start the academic term but does not have enough days of benefits to pay for the entire term, VA will nonetheless pay benefits for the entire term. Benefits can also be extended under the same statute for non-quarter or semester based programs but the rules for calculating the length of the extension are slightly different. For these non-standard term program, benefits can only be extended to the end of the term if the student has enough benefits to make it to at least the halfway point in the period. However, end-of-term benefits can only be extended for a maximum of 12 weeks. If the student does not have enough benefits to make it to the halfway point, then benefits cannot be extended. Benefits will stop on the day the student exhaust his or her remaining entitlement.
Readjudication and Retroactive Payments
The process of readjudicating retroactive cases means that VA will determine previous times where we may have underpaid tuition and fees to a school and housing benefits to a student. VA will issue any retroactive payments due for housing or tuition and fees, and provide letters telling informing students of these new payments.
If you have any questions or are experiencing a financial hardship due to this issue, please contact the Education Call Center at 1-888-442-4551, Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Central Time so we may take immediate action. We will be actively monitoring our Education Call Centers and social media outlets for any questions or concerns.
VA is committed to helping Veterans and their families receive all the education benefits they are entitled to under the law. For more information, go to:

2020.10.27 18:06 Theraria Plasma Accelerator Vs Guardian Plasma Charger - Going against the Grain

o7 CMDRs
I've recently (or finally given the time I've spent in the Galaxy) gotten to looking at the Guardian Weapons, and I've seen a swathe of people stating that GPCs are completely useless and inferior to PAs. So I decided to run some numbers, get into a little Theory-Crafting, and here's what I found.
I based my working on the assumption that they were being used against either, a dedicated PvP pilot, or by a dedicated PvE combat pilot. Meaning that either the player ship was well fitted, or the PvE targets were Elite assassinations or Spec Ops level. I took an average for shield spec recommendations which resulted in 50% kinetic res', 60% Thermal res'. This accounts for some people having lower shields without boosters, but by in large I saw the values sat around 55%/65%+ respectively. (Or the mighty Cucumber by D2EA. at 70%/70%.) Reason for why only these two looked at below.
So, what do the weapons do.

Finally, comparing the Thermal load. The LPA has a standard Thermal load of 21.8, which goes up to 25.07. While the GPC generates a measly 6.2, allowing for much more sustainable volleys of fire.
Now, I'm not wholly advocating for the GPC in all scenarios. The biggest draw back of the GPC is its damage drop off, starting at only 1000m. So those big bulky ships chasing after an FDL would not benefit at all. But smaller ships, like the FAS, FDL, Vulture etc. That can sit in behind their target and have the maneuverability to keep them within their sites. They should look more closely at this weapon. Small fry ships, will die 'slower'. But it's those big payouts that the GPC will really shine.
TL:DR The Large Guardian Plasma Charger actually deals a more sustainable and higher DPS than the Grade 5 Overcharged Large Plasma Accelerator.

The parts that are the resultant speculation are enclosed ( ). So there is no misunderstanding, I do NOT have access to LE computers nor has Barry given me a detailed confession.
PREFACE: I am taking on this task in order to document what likely happened. Mixed with our varying opinions, there have been so many misunderstandings and falsehoods by the YouTubers, print and TV media it boggles the mind. We tend to put trust in the so called official media (profit and drama oriented), to our own peril.
I will put my speculation in ( ), so you can more easily ignore it after you read it, as you choose. In order to tie like topics together, I will use some flash forward comments that tie them together, so readers don’t have to constantly analyze everything from before. If, for any reason, you vehemently disagree ... please stop reading and listen to calming music (lol).
Most of the items below are already known by “old-timers” on this Sub and know each has been beaten to death multiple times. I hope the benefit of all of this will mainly fall to the new-timers. I believe that there will be a lot of new-timers because even though I am now convinced of Barry’s guilt, I fear he may go free. After refinement, perhaps D&D will pin this post to the top.
GROUND RULES In the interest of brevity and our mutual sanity I’m only including the most relevant of topics - IMO. Speculative comments after the first week, about what Barry said or didn’t say, did or didn’t do will not be incorporated. While such may look suspicious, they easily degrade into Barry Bashing. ie: We don’t need to labor to make him look even worse. However, subsequent recorded interviews of those who had first hand knowledge, like Barry, Morgan and LE have been a rich source.

Please bring any significant Omissions or Corrections to my attention and I will incorporate them. But let’s stick with finding the relevant truth and showing some mercy to my typing finger. LOL

Barry has demonstrated his tenacity in his months of “searching” but his theories don’t impress LE or most of us. I believe he is doing this in hopes of swaying the public and establishing points for his future defense lawyers.
IN SUMMARY: After her murder, Barry did three things that were clever. He was clever in leading LE into thinking that she was abducted with the location of her bike. He was clever in tossing her personal item (helmet) off westbound US50 ... establishing her abductors’ direction of travel. The third thing was in disposing of her body without leaving a GPS trail. The rest of it was a disaster, with the major ones being: His PLAN A. attempt at burying her at the Salida job site, which had to be aborted. It left a GPS trail for LE, which then exposed his resultant goofy excuse of going into Salida and maintaining the Bobcat around midnight. His alibi of being out-of-town in Broomfield was ill conceived and assumed that Morgan and Puckett wouldn’t mention that he didn’t order the new bricks and he didn’t bring tools for doing brickwork. He thought he could intimidate them into lying to LE but that didn’t work out. God Bless Morgan.
The following 21 items were influenced by my opinion that Barry killed his wife. Some people believe she was abducted. For 4 months I was a big believer of his innocence, taking on all comers. Then, Morgan’s TV interview raised questions for which nobody had answers. Suddenly , the pieces fell into place for me. If, after reading this, you don’t think this fair to Barry, please respond with your comments and thinking on the key points. To answer the YA BUTS ...

  1. Fri. 5/8/2020: Using his Bobcat, Barry finishes grading the Salida riverside job site. Part of a concrete slab for a new house was poured sometime in the past and the slab for the part he is now grading is going to be poured on Monday the 11th.
  2. Sat. 5/9 Barry meets Morgan around 9am at the Salida riverside job site. The sandy part of the lot next to the river is a mess and he and Morgan plan to spend the day raking it out and cleaning it up. The Bobcat machine is still at the site in case they need it.
  3. Sat. 5/9: Barry gets a call at around 11am from Suzanne. She wants him to come home and spend time with her hiking, biking, etc. This shows that Suzanne is lonesome (and probably depressed.) Reasons: COVID closed down her gym where she went to workout and socialize with friends. Likewise, her church is closed. For exercise she becomes an avid biker but that is a solitary activity. Her cell service is crap. All she hears is the sound of traffic from US50. Her girls have been away for a week at a church camp out in Utah.
  4. Sat. 5/9: Morgan, at some point, hears that Barry was around Salida shopping Sat. afternoon. (Not sure of any implication here.)
  5. Sat. 5/9: A recent Unconfirmed Reddit rumor says that Barry and Suzanne ate dinner in Salida. I doubt it. However, Susanne had been spotted picking up takeout food in Salida around Thursday and maybe that morphed into the Dinner story. Who knows for sure?
  6. Sat. 5/9 noon to 7pm: Different sources say that for an unspecified period of time, starting as early as noon and ending as late as 7pm, Suzanne is on social media with her BFF in Indiana, back and forth for a long time about a wedding. Apparently, Andy spoke with the BFF and relayed his memory. Media butchered it, leading to the current vagueness. (Suggestions that Barry had killed her on Friday and was the one texting about wedding plans seems almost silly, since it is doubtful that he would understand wedding stuff and also fool her BFF.) The BFF later says it ended abruptly. (a. Barry yanked her phone away and demanded Dinner. This could have triggered the confrontation causing her demise. b. Cell service dropped out. c. She tired of the conversation.)
  7. Sat. 5/9: Between approx. 7pm and 10:30pm (It could be earlier. We just don’t have any clues.) Something triggered the violent act by Barry. I apologize for the drama upcoming in the speculation, but it is what I keep visualizing. (Upset at something that Barry said or did, Suzanne blurted out ... “I’ve had it. I have thought about it long and hard and I want a divorce, half of our assets, and I’m taking the girls back to Indiana where I was once happy! Furthermore, I am going to find a real man. One who knows how to treat, love and satisfy a woman! Barry exploded, grabbed her by the neck and strangled her as he screamed “shut up! The resultant adrenaline rush was going to last for many hours, helping him focus but also surging, impacting his thinking and leaving him an exhausted mess in his hotel room on Sunday.) Later, during a week long LE search warrant search of the house and property, LE apparently did not find a “smoking gun” or a crime scene (because there wasn’t a bloody crime scene to clean up ... maybe just a tipped over lamp.)
  8. Sat. 5/9 Approx. 10:30pm, maybe earlier: Note: Skills to deal with a crisis - Barry is a successful businessman in a tough industry. For over 30 years he had amassed a net worth of over 2 million dollars, including the 500k from Suzanne’s inheritance. He had a degree in landscaping / grading and that business requires strong REACTIVE skills. Nothing ever seems to go as planned. It rains, crew doesn’t show, silt fence breaks and big underground rocks stop the grading progress - these are just a few examples. (Some think it was a pre-planned event because her body hasn’t been found. He just reacted to a “problem”. )
  9. As humans, when faced with a crisis we seek FAMILIARITY in dealing with it. (PLAN A was formed. He needed to dispose of her body. He had just finished grading a lot in town on Friday and had been there until 11am that morning. The ground would be easy to scoop and his Bobcat was still there. Even better, on Monday another contractor would be pouring a slab over it. Perfect! Added 10/26: Barry’s neighbor, when checking on Suzanne at his request said there were cars in the driveway. Probably the girl’s. There would not have been much room to back and turn around the Bobcat/trailer.
  10. Sat. 5/9: Sometime between 11:30pm and midnight an older woman living near that job site is awoken by the sound of construction equipment. (She thought it might have been Friday but subsequent LE actions show it was Sat.) She knows what it is because a Bobcat had been grading there for several days. It lasts for between 15 and 30 minutes. She wasn’t sure. Later, she recalls going to the site the”next day” and asking if operators left their keys in the equipment, allowing pranksters to start it up in the middle of the night. (Next day would have been Mothers Day ... unlikely anyone was at the site. I think it was Monday, the “next workday”). (It was not a prankster, it was Barry with Suzanne’s body, wrapped in a tarp, in the back of his pickup. Barry was not worried about his GPSs giving him away as he could make up some story for driving to town. Now he was at the job site and had started the Bobcat, warmed it up and backed it off it’s trailer. Due to the noise ... Suddenly, lights were coming on in the residences. His first thought would have been that someone might have called LE! He drove the Bobcat back on its trailer, left it behind and hightailed it back home.). Later, in one of Barry’s public interviews, he said that he answered every one of LE’s questions, for 30 hours and stressed that he had “forgotten” only one thing, that he went to town around midnight and did maintenance on his Bobcat! (Obviously, using GPS results, LE caught his omission during an interview and their BS detectors went off. )
  11. Sun. 5/10 Mothers Day 12:30am to 4:00am: (Barry, driving back home after the disastrous Plan A, came up with PLAN B. He could not drive around all night with her body looking for a disposal site. He knew that his phone and truck GPSs would lead LE there. FAMILIARITY rules! He remembers an abandoned mining shaft from when he was hunting. The old road leading to it came close so he could carry her. It was not too far from his home ... but far enough. He switched her to the Range Rover SUV without a (working) GPS and left his phone behind. Knowing he needed an alibi, he remembered the needed brick wall fix in Broomfield from last fall. He also needed to divert attention so he put her bike and helmet in the SUV. On the way west on US50 he turned left on CR 225, pulled to a stop and tossed her bike into the deep ditch next to the road. Nobody would notice it unless searching for it. He turned around and then turned west on US50. 1/2 mile later he rolled down the window and tossed the helmet as far as he could. LE would think that her abductors went westerly. Perfect, because if she was found LE would think the abductors did it. Plus, since he would be going east to Broomfield they would never figure it out what he had done!)
  12. Sun. 5/10: Mothers Day 4:00am till 9:00am Later, Morgan remembers that she was woken at about 4:00am by the sound of a truck, which then leaves. Working with him almost every day, she recognizes the sound of his truck. (We don’t know for sure it was him or why he was there. Maybe he tossed a tarp and Suzanne’s clothing into the dumpster .. he had been there many times picking her up for work. FAMILIARITY! ) (Back at home before 5:00am, he tries to shake the cobwebs from being up all night, he takes a brisk shower and eats some food. The constant adrenaline high has his hands shaking and the food helps.) He leaves home at 5:30am and remembers the time. (He knows that bank and other cctv cams will record him in town, along with his GPSs.) On his 3 1/2 hour drive to Broomfield he called his lead worker, Morgan Gentile. Morgan said “He called me that Sunday – Mother’s Day – and was really frantic, really didn’t sound like himself,” Gentile said. “I hung up the phone and I thought he just had the worst night of his life.” ( Morgan was right.) Gentile agreed to get Puckett and drive to Broomfield by dinner time so they can do the brick wall job Monday. He said he has reserved a room.
  13. Sun. 5/10 Mothers Day 9:00am to 5:30pm: Barry is at the brick wall and starts tearing down some of it. He quits after 1/2 hour having forgotten to bring the right tools and then realizing he, in his haste, he forgot to order a pallet of matching bricks. Note- this all came from Morgan’s interview. He goes to the Holiday Inn Express and checks in. The time of check-in is not public. Evidence shows: Sweaty from the brick work, he takes another shower and leaves two soaked towels on the floor. In subsequent interviews Morgan, Barry and Puckett all commented on the strong bleach smell.(Why he took bleach and how he used it in the hotel is guesswork. I don’t have a clue. Barry, after his shower, spent most of the day in bed. No wonder, he was coming down from no sleep and a multi-hour adrenaline high.) Morgan said the bed had been used and remade. Later, his girls called to say they couldn’t reach Mom to wish her Happy Mothers Day. He said she is probably on a bike ride.
  14. Sun., 5/10: Mothers Day approx. 5:30pm. His daughters call him and are worried so Barry, (according to his plan), calls a neighbor lady and asks her to check the house. She does and tells him Suz is not answering the doorbell, no lights on and the cars are there. He asks her to see if her bike is there and she reports back NO. He tells her to call 911 and says he is on the way back. Morgan later reports that Barry, at 6:10, called to say he left tools for Puckett and her at the hotel but she later discovered they were not the tools needed for brick work. It was like he just dumped his pickup toolbox. (Among other things, the lack of brick working tools shows his Broomfield alibi was scatterbrained and made up on the fly. He was counting on them to not rat him out.) Puckett and Morgan stay there until early Tuesday but can’t do much at the site because of tools and the fact Barry still hadn’t ordered any pallets of bricks to replace the old ones! (Another sign the alibi was phony.)
  15. Sun. 5/10 6:30pm to midnight: Morgan and Puckett arrive at the Holiday Inn Express - Broomfield. Barry had left and they didn’t see him. Barry calls Morgan and tells her that Suzanne is missing so they are on their own. LE has been told the route Suzanne usually rides and they begin searching. En-route, Barry has called some friends and asked them to join the search. More and more LE searchers arrive and are instructed to park on the northbound side of CR225. Around 8:00pm they find Suzanne’s bike in a deep ditch along 225. One of Barry’s friends, seeing LE manhandling the bike up the slope and then several LE examining it, yelled to preserve fingerprint and DNA evidence. One of LE replied: This isn’t the TV show CSI! Arriving searchers have been driving on the right side of 225, obliterating the “abduction crime scene”. The manhandling, CSI comment and crime scene destruction are later given by Barry as an example of LE’s incompetence. (If it goes to trial these will likely be the hub of his defense.) Barry arrived at CR225 about 9:00pm. LE thinks she was dazed by the fall and has crawled or stumbled into the woods or creek. Some searched all night.
  16. Note: I called in a forensic tip to the CBI hotline in early June that IF the gravel in the bike treads matched the gravel on 225 then she had ridden it there and was abducted. IF instead, the gravel in the treads matched the pricey gravel in her subdivision the bike was likely hauled to 225 in a vehicle and tossed into the ditch. In the “tossed” scenario the bike treads were filled with subdivision gravel from coming home from the previous biking trip. No idea if LE acted on it, but it could have been a defining item and during a trial could help show his deception with the bike.
  17. Mon. 5/11 Barry had been near a grocery store, on the phone with LE talking about what she was wearing. Per LE protocol, they asked him to write it down and drop it off. A lot has been speculated about his behavior, which is academic. He can say he was an upset husband without sleep and any behavior would be understandable.
  18. Searches - credit to Lauren Scharf who broadcast these on 7/9.
5/11 Various Chaffee County Govt. teams have 100 people searching the area along with Drones and 8 dogs. 5/12 Only dogs and drones. 5/13 CBI and FBI join the search. 5/14 Personal Item found ** 5/15 Large grid search of 2.5 mile stretch of US50 (highway closed). 5/17 Lake Fooses searched by dive team. 5/21 - 5/23 Salida riverfront construction site searched. 5/26 Morphew home site search completed and returned to family. 7/9 Morphew home searched for a day.
** The item found on 5/14 was not publicly identified by LE. One report said a jogger first saw it. (I believe it was her helmet. He would have needed something noticeable and what else would a biker have? I considered her cell but they would have pinged that immediately.) Also the first LE poster showed her wearing her blue helmet. The next poster was without the helmet, prominently showing her diamond ring. (Even though she purportedly had disappeared on a bike ride, I believed they no longer showed the helmet because LE had it in custody.)
  1. While Barry has been criticized for not searching for his wife, in an interview he said he had been searching daily. Recently, he said he searched for 100 days. There is evidence that he searched numerous times, especially when the ambush reporter Tyson Draper in a 5/31 video, interviewed Barry on CR225 with his mother in the truck. (Barry’ s resolve to paint the scenario is amazing when you consider he already knew her location.)
  2. Sept. 10: In a Fox21 interview, Morgan said she was interviewed 5 times by LE! She said they asked for her cell phone and she gave it to them. She said they wanted her to take a lie detector test but she declined. (Smart person!) She also said that Barry’s nephew and his friend told her they wouldn’t give her the (entire?) paycheck so it wouldn’t look like “hush money”. (This just adds to the picture of guilt by Barry.) Upon hearing all of this, Barry said she was fired and that she was a meth head. Barry likewise trashed Puckett. (This shows Barry’s sweet side.) Morgan said she is afraid of Barry and moved to S.Dakota. (Good thinking, but now .... please secretly move to some other state.) People have criticized her for being coarse. I admire her for being a brave single mom of 2 who helped expose a murderer, putting her own well-being at risk. God bless her and I hope her life gets better.
  3. September 24: Suzanne’s brother, Andy Moorman, led a 6 day search of the area with hundreds of volunteers and with cadaver dogs. They used technology to record what was searched. Several times dogs hit on false alarms. Andy is admired by all for his efforts, but unfortunately, Suzanne’s remains and nothing of evidentiary value were found.
  4. Barry has, with regularity, advanced and repeated his theories as to what happened. These include a. Mountain Lion b.Fired ex-employee .. revenge c. abducted and d. flawed LE search. Only two remain: Giant eagle and alien from outer space abduction. Now, winter is coming and the rugged terrain will make searches very difficult or impossible ... until spring.

2020.10.21 18:48 FluffyMcGee5 Local COVID-19 Update (Wed Oct 21st)

Local COVID-19 Update (Wed Oct 21st)
FYI - MLHU having news conference this afternoon to announce additional measures.
  • 9 new cases reported today (all residents of London; Ages: 1 age 0-19, 3 age 20-29, 3 age 30-39 and 2 age 50-59).
  • We are averaging 7 new cases per day, with an average of 2 of those having "no known link".
  • 1 death (71 year old man) and 6 recoveries reported today. Thinking of the family. :-(
  • Testing Update: For those of you speculating that our testing has dropped (across all testing sites), there is now some official data to support you. Last week, 5,718 tests were completed as opposed to 8,492 tests the week before (this covers all testing, not just the assessment centres). The odd thing is that the test positivity is being reported at 0.3% (a drop from 0.6% the week before)... but 0.3% x 5,718 tests would imply only 17 new cases last week, which is way too low, so I'm confused.
  • Outbreak Update: No new outbreaks declared today. We currently have 9 long-term care/retirement home outbreaks.
  • School / Child Care Update: No new cases reported today. We have had 9 total cases (1 childcare/early years, 5 elementary, 3 secondary).

Questions Answers
If everyone suddenly behaves “perfectly” with their food choices, how much would that go towards becoming sustainable regarding climate change? What I mean is, do we the people have enough power to make a difference when compared to industrial pollution etc Good question. In short, yes. Food currently causes about 25% of all climate change. Different foods cause very different amounts of climate change, so reducing our food climate impacts by 50% is doable (e.g. that amount of reduction has been found for average vegan diets - but see above that it doesn't have to be so restrictive / simple as going vegan). This would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 12.5% (50% of 25%), which is significant. Furthermore, if spared land could to be used to combat climate change, e.g. planting trees, then that could offset our remaining food emissions i.e. reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25%. However, this still leaves 75% of climate change that needs to be addressed i.e. we do also need to stop burning fossil fuels. When we've done that, then food will be the biggest cause of climate change so we need to be thinking about that too
What are some practical steps we can take today to prepare for these realities and make an authentic difference in climate change? I think a lot of folks recycle but that seems like the minimal amount one can do and is it really effective? But then the next step is going vegan or have a compost in your yard. These options aren’t the most practical for middle income families with kids. Thanks for your great question. Recycling is important for lots of reasons - in terms of climate change it reduces greenhouse gas emissions because the energy needed to recycle is lower than that needed to extract + use the raw materials. But for most foods, the contents of the packaging has a bigger impact on climate change than the packaging itself. For the most part, animal-based foods cause more climate change than plant-based foods (per gram of food or per gram of protein), though it depends a lot on farming practices, and e.g. air-freighted fruit and veg can cause similar climate impacts as the lower emissions meats like chicken. There are big differences in climate impacts between different types of food e.g. an 8oz steak and fries dinner causes over 20 times the climate impact of a microwaved potato and beans - so we can make a big difference by changing our choices. Luckily some of these changes don't break the bank (beans are cheaper than steak!), though I know from personal experience that experimenting with new meals doesn't always go down so well with the kids, so that part is tough... For most people, the simplest place to start is quantities: e.g. halving the quantity of the meat, while adding more veggies! You're right that composting helps - food waste sent to landfill causes extra emissions because it decomposes into methane, a potent greenhouse gas - whereas composting decomposes mostly to carbon dioxide. I know its tough with kids to avoid food waste, but again it can also save money. In our house fwiw, people help themselves from cooking bowl/tray, and if you put it on your plate you need to eat it up, or promise to take less next time! Hope that helps!
Are we screwed? I am more optimistic now than I used to be, now I know more information. We have all the technology breakthroughs we need to address climate change ... if everyone were to implement the changes needed... The most promising thing I learnt researching about food and climate change was about land: the foods that cause the most climate change also tend to use the most land, so if we change our diets to eat less of them, then we free up land. We really need land to address climate change e.g. by planting / keeping more trees. To give an example to illustrate this, on average, plant-based foods use 16 times less land than animal-based foods. This means that in the extreme case where everyone in the world went vegan, this would free up 3/4 i.e. the majority of agricultural land for other purposes including forest. Since 37% of the ice-free land on Earth is used for agriculture, that's a lot of land! I'm not suggesting we need to go that far, but it shows there's a lot of potential
Hi Sarah, thank you for doing this. Do you have an estimate on what's is the impact of food waste on global warming. I am referring to direct impact on CO2 and methane production food waste. And if it is substantial, can we use food waste to generate energy so deal with 2 things at a time? Yes, food waste is a significant issue. For an average person, food waste decomposition to methane adds about 20% to their daily emissions. If we collect that food waste instead of sending it to landfill then indeed it can be used to produce methane that's used for energy (or if there are methane collectors at landfill sites). But that isn't the most efficient way to produce energy, because producing the food also contributes to climate change - it would be better to waste less, really..
What type of food would you consider as "ideal" to reduce one's contribution to this problem ? One study looked at changing the quantities of different foods to meet nutritional requirements and minimise climate impacts They managed to reduce climate impacts by 90% i.e. ten times less climate change from food! But they admit it wasn't a very palatable diet, containing a lot of whole-grain breakfast cereal (without milk!), peas and seeds! They then went on to look at smaller departures from acceptable diets. This got me thinking though... because I had the same question as you... I suspect that it would be possible to formally meet all the macro and micronutrient requirements by combining different foods in a way that minimises climate change - but it might end up looking a lot like some of the meal replacement drinks available e.g. Huel. I don't think any of these meal replacement drinks have calculated their climate impacts, though and I don't know how healthy they are (e.g. uptake of different combinations of micronutrients - and all the nutrition that isn't in micronutrients).
Which meal choices are unexpectedly bad for the environment? I mean, many people are aware that meat, especially beef, is not eco-friendly, but are there other food items that harm the environment that we are unaware of? Most people are surprised to learn that a large latte (~500ml of milk) causes a lot more impact than a regular tea or coffee containing just a tablespoon of milk - about 10 times more in fact (e.g. see milk chapter of my free book, linked in my intro at the top). On the plus side, most people are surprised that shipping food isn't nearly as bad as they thought. Shipping causes 100 times less emissions than air-frieghting, for the same weight of food. So bringing an apple from the other side of the world isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things. On the other hand flying e.g. strawberries from another continent brings the climate impact up to be similar to that of a lower emissions animal product like chicken
What are your thoughts on the consumption and farming of insects as a low impact nutrition source? And do you it could ever become part of many people's diets? I personally think eating insects is quite fun and we often give out free insects at our outreach events for but in practice it isn't necessary! There are lots of low impact non-insect foods out there! However, farming insects to feed to animals (to replace soy) is a growing industry, and a good thing if the insects are eating things that don't cause a lot of climate change - e.g. food waste or food production byproducts (e.g. leftovers from brewing such as Entocycle)
What do you think is the root cause behind a growing trend of ignoring the science and facts on subjects such as climate change? Gosh, that's a great question and I'm not an expert on that topic so can't speak with any authority. Speaking as a citizen (not as an expert) I have the impression humans become less rational when they feel afraid (e.g. of climate change), and this isn't helping.. Although COVID-19 has made us more afraid, in many many ways, I see a glimmer of hope that there has been much more weight placed on the opinions of scientists/experts - and awe that humans can't always control nature
Thanks for this AMA! I have 2 questions: 1) Is there anything that you learned in your research that really surprised you? 2) I’m always a little skeptical of efforts to place the responsibility for action on the consumer rather than the industry. Of course our choices matter, but at the end of the day, even if I recycle every piece of plastic that comes into my house, that’s still nothing compared to big box stores that are throwing away tons of plastic every day with no consequences - there needs to be pressure on both sides. Has any of your research been about changes that should be made on an industry scale? For example, “if 50,000 people went vegan, it would have this effect, but if just one cattle ranch {insert fact here}, that would have the same net effect.” Any facts along those lines that you can share with us so that we can then share them with our elected officials? Absolutely we shouldn't be burdening consumers with all the responsibility. I'm actually mostly passionate about labelling (all foods with climate impacts) for a different reason: food producers end up seeing their emissions numbers, and when they know consumers see them too, they are motivated to change. For example in the UK they have traffic light colours on the front of packets to show the amount of sugar in a product - red is bad, green is good, amber in the middle. They changed the threshold between red and amber - but they gave the food industry good warning - and it turned out that no food moved from amber to red, even though they changed the threshold - because all the food producers reformulated their products to reduce the amount of sugar in them (before the threshold was changed)! So consumers benefited because they were getting less sugar in their food! It would be brilliant if that sort of thing could happen with climate impacts of food!
Is composting and gardening a decent way to prevent some food waste? Is there a difference in gas production between a landfill of food waste or personal compost? Like if a million people composted instead of throwing away their banana peels, would it make the same amount of gasses? Also, what impact does the manufacturing of fertilizer have on the environment? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks Yes, there is a difference between landfill and personal compost. Compost heaps in people's gardens are usually relatively dry, and so carbon in the food waste decays into carbon dioxide. However, landfill sites tend to be wetter, and so the air (oxygen) can't get in to help turn the carbon into carbon dioxide (CO2), so instead the carbon decomposes more into methane (CH4) which is ten times worse at retaining heat under the atmosphere than carbon dioxide (averaged over a 100 year time period). So it is better if people compost banana peels rather than sending them to landfill. Food waste decomposition at landfill sites adds typically 20% to the climate impact of food, so adding up all the types of food waste (not just banana peel) it is a big deal Manufacturing fertilizer, and nitrous oxide from fertilizer application (whether organic manure or manufactured) are the main causes of on-farm climate impacts from producing plant-based foods (whether for human or animal consumption). The manufacture of fertilizer causes climate change because it uses a lot of energy to extract nitrogen from the air and turn it into fertilizer, and usually this energy comes from burning fossil fuels
I've heard if you feed seaweed to cows, they emit less methane. Is that true? If it is true, why isn't it used? Yes, there are various methane inhibitors being developed to reduce the amount of methane from cows, which is great - and even better when they get used widely. At the moment there isn't a huge incentive for farmers to use them - having labelling to show the amount of greenhouse gas emissions = climate impact from each pack of food would provide some incentive because at least consumers would be able to see which beef causes less climate change
[deleted] That's very sad. Definitely that diet is going to affect his physical, if not also mental health. There are definitely eco friendly diets that are much healthier than this! I hope he can get some help to recover his mental health.
How can I eat steak and drink milk and not be part of the problem? Because I really like steak and milk. yeah, some of these higher climate impact foods do taste really good. I feel your pain! (I love slow roast lamb...mmm) There is a big variation in climate impacts between different farming practices e.g. see this beautiful graphic from the fabulous Our World in Data project e.g. there's a huge range for beef. Unfortunately this information is mostly not available to consumers. I really want to see climate impact labelling (gCO2e) on each food packet so I can choose the lowest impact food within a category e.g. lowest impact steak. You can also see in the graphic that despite the huge range for beef, it doesn't overlap much with the plant-based foods. So again I'd take it back to quantities and frequency. If you eat a lot of steak e.g. if you ate it daily then its probably your biggest contributor to climate change from your food: an average 8oz steak produced in Europe causes more climate change than a whole day of food for an average person in the world (~10kg emissions cf ~6kg emissions). On the other hand, if you ate steak just twice a year, then the numbers say that this would increase your total food climate impact by 1 percent i.e. not much (2 8oz steaks a year = 210kg of emissions = 20kg cf average food emissions per year of 3656kg = 2190kg so 20/2190 = 0.01 - I'm assuming reddit readers are geeks who want numbers - you can ignore the numbers if you're not that geeky :)
I hear a lot of people say they but organic grass fed beef for the environment, how does that compare to beyond burger in terms of ghg emissions per calorie? There is a wide range of climate impacts depending on the way beef is produced. It isn't clear that organic grass fed is better than other methods - the longer a cow lives the more it burps methane, and grass causes more cow methane burps per calorie than more refined foods such as soy - however eating soy causes deforestation so these issues partially cancel out. However, emissions from beef generally are much higher than plant based alternatives like beyond burger e.g. you can see that in this fab graphic I mentioned before You can see that processed plant foods like tofu cause much less climate change than average beef, by more than a factor of 10 (per gram of protein)
Hi Sarah. Thanks for the AMA, it’s been really interesting! I’m interested in getting involved in climate change research, could you talk a bit on how you “learned about climate change properly”? And what others could do to learn more themselves? Thanks! Great! I started with this fantastic book, written by my former mentor - this was the inspiration for my work. But for all the latest science, if you're up for a lot of reading, the IPCC reports are amazing - this is the main one and then there are two really important updates to it here and here Happy reading!!! (And wikipedia is incredibly helpful for a lot of easy-to-read explanations - if you check the references are good as always)
Thank you for this AMA. What animal meat has lowest environmental impact? Also, overall would cooked meat be less impactful compared to raw meat (because the facility must have a large oven etc so could cook more efficiently than cooking individually at a house)? Thank you! *Sorry English isn't my mother tongue Chicken, eggs and fish all have about the same low climate impact, on average e.g. take a look at the beautiful graphic I mentioned earlier - but again you can see there's a range, and e.g. as they point out intensively farmed chicken is at the lower end of the graphic (though this doesn't always have the best animal welfare). I was surprised to learn that fish has similar impacts whether its caught at sea or farmed (most salmon in the UK comes from fish farms, rather than caught at sea) - its a coincidence that the amount of fuel used to run a ship to go fishing causes a similar amount of climate impact to growing food to feed fish. Its less of a coincidence that farmed fish causes similar impacts to chicken - growing the food is a large part of the climate impacts of each. Very interesting question about cooking at scale! Yes, heating up a large metal box (home oven) is an inefficient way of cooking food compared to bulk cooking e.g. buying pre-cooked. You can also investigate other ways to cook at home that don't involve heating up a large amount of metal (or air) e.g. slow cooking in a well-insulated oven is much better for the climate, even though it takes longer to cook
What do you think of permaculture and converting suburban lawns into food gardens? We're limited by land to grow more food and to help with climate solutions (such as growing more trees / reducing deforestation), so if people can spare their lawns to do something more useful with the land then that's going to help the climate. The more biomass is building up (stem, trunk, branches, roots) that is permanent, the more carbon is being stored so the more carbon dioxide is being sucked out of the atmosphere and locked away - so turning lawn into permaculture food production is doubly good for the climate (if it reduces the amount of land needed to produce food outside the home, and if the plants are building up mass from one year to the next). However, not all home gardening is as efficient as doing it professionally - for a lot of people its going to be more efficient and effective to plant trees on the lawn cf growing a very small amount of food
Are there any brands you would recommend we use or don't use? (From the U.K btw) Also my mum has started growing veg in the back garden. How much in greenhouse gas is she saving by doing so? (Carrots, corgettes, potatoes and salads if that makes a difference) All the numbers I'm quoting are averages across production methods but there have been many great questions about how different production methods cause different emissions - indeed they do. I think we can only make significant progress, and have a good discussion, when we have more transparent up-to-date information about how different food items (including brands) contribute to climate change. Ultimately I want to see mandatory accredited labels on all food packets showing their climate impact (gCO2e). To reach that goal we would need a lot of products already doing that voluntarily ... so I encourage you to support brands that already provide that information. In the UK I believe only Oatly and Quorn currently provide that information but hopefully soon more will follow.
Regarding your question about growing at home: much of the emissions from fruit and veg growing are around transport, storage and refrigeration, and most of the rest are from fertilizer application. So there is a good chance that your mums veg are much better for the climate than shop bought. Having said that, most seasonal fruit and veg cause a small proportion of people's daily food emissions, so its not making a huge difference. However, if your mum previously ate a lot of air-freighted fruit and veg then this makes a much bigger difference. Getting involved with growing-your-own is a great way to learn about seasonal foods and appreciate the hard work put in by farmers, so we waste less food and buy more in season!
the below is a reply to the above
Is there somewhere I can support your accredited labels idea? There are organisations like the Carbon Trust in this country who do accredited labels. You can find a very nice article which influenced me a lot - by a leading researcher in this field, saying we need mandatory labelling (who also made the data for many of the numbers I'm quoting) As for campaining to have it mandated - I don't know of an existing campaign. I did work with the Earl of Caithness to table an amendment to the UK's Agriculture Bill, however unfortunately it didn't pass. In case you want more info on that, here it is!
The proposed GHGE labelling amendment, as tabled, pasted from
253A Page 32, line 36, at end insert—
“(o) requiring information about attributed lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions for the product to be available at the point of sale, including on packaging. (2A) For the purposes of subsection (2)(o), regulations may include provision for financial assistance for businesses towards the cost of providing that information.”
Member’s explanatory statement This amendment makes provision for greenhouse gas emissions emitted in the lifecycle of agriculture products to be available to consumers at the point of sale (e.g. on packaging), and allows for the provision of financial assistance for food producers and accreditation bodies to compile this information.''

Hi Sarah, If my wife and I are thinking of starting a family would we have a greater impact by doing our best to limit the number of children to one or two (twins happen) or are we in a position with current technology where it would be completely reasonable to have seven like my Grandparents did? This is a serious life choice question for us now as we are both concerned about the future and our impact on the planet and we keep seeing very mixed information on the question. Gosh, that's a big question. There's a huge range of climate impacts depending on the person e.g. see which is also shown as kgCO2e per person per day in my free book Fig 1.1. In short, in some countries an average person causes over 10 times the climate impact of the average person in another country. So there is a lot we can do in our lifestyles. So 10 very low impact children could cause similar climate impacts to 1 average child. But children don't always do what you tell them :)
How can the size of the universe be 93B light years if the its age is only 13.7B? The size of the universe might not be related to its age. Usually in research we talk about the size of the 'observable universe' which is the only bit we can see - because light hasn't yet had time to reach us from more distant parts of the universe!
Hi Sarah, how much would emissions be reduced if we eradicated baked beans consumption? I did look into this when I was writing my book - I get this question a lot! It turns out that some humans do fart small amounts of methane, but this is genetic and not linked to the consumption of baked beans. Even for the humans that do fart methane, its 100 times less than the methane burped by cows to produce a large steak. However, increasing the amount of fibre in diets (e.g. from more beans) is linked to an increase in the amount of wind, and improved health!
Hello, this may not be related directly to your field of study but I just wanted to know what the prospects and career of an astrophysicist might be like. I am considering a career in astrophysics but many people around me tell me it's not worth it. So what would your advice be? Thanks in advance. Astrophysics is a lot of fun and you learn lots of incredibly important skills along the way, like data analysis, approximating calculations, and of course all the underlying physics. However, its true that there aren't a lot of astrophysics-specific jobs out there - but check out our STFC Food Network+ project which links up astro, particle and nuclear physicists with lots of really interesting food-related challenges
As a research scientist..what do you mean when you say..."learned about climate change properly for the first time"? Were you ignoring it before, learning about it improperly before? This phrasing is very odd... I hadn't given climate change a lot of thought before - I wasn't an eco-warrior growing up - I was interested in astrophysics / the stars. But like most people I was aware of it from hearing people talk / the news etc so I learned about it in a vague way without giving it a lot of my attention. So for me it was a big deal when I got around to sitting down and really learning by asking questions and trying to find out the answers - I guess that's what I meant by 'properly'
how hard is it to do outreach when Brian is hogging the limelight? the more the merrier :)
Often I feel that people forget about other environmental factors that foods impact. Such as the impact of avocados on local water sources. What is your opinion on people using co2 to compare everything? When often its hard to compare the impact of an 8oz steak to the pack of avocados. Great question - yes I'm personally focussing just on climate change impacts here but there are lots of other factors including health, taste, cost, human and animal welfare, as well as other environmental impacts like land use, water, biodiversity, runoff etc. I'd love to see all these things factored into the discussion too - but with the numbers for climate change included!
I understand the motivation to try to reduce emissions wherever it is practical to do so in any industry, but surely when it comes to quality of life, trying to make really deep cuts by drastically changing diet isn't really a good way to go? Wouldn't we be better off squarely focusing on key industries - transport, power generation, construction, heavy industry, etc, rather than making people miserable by foisting lots and lots of change upon peoples' diet? Food, water, and housing are three things that are highly personal, with loads of subjective aspects and I'd hate to see e.g. government boldly intrude in this sphere beyond cutting egregious waste and a few worst practices. Maybe some tinkering around the edges is OK but the quality of life cost will rise dramatically with every few % you try to cut beyond the low hanging fruit. I agree we need to focus on cutting burning fossil fuels. When we've done that food will be the biggest contributor to climate change, so we're going to need to change that too
I would love to only eat sustainably farmed meat and would be willing to pay extra for it, but I find it difficult to find this information. Is there anything I should look for or avoid in terms of labeling, packaging and ‘buzz words’ when I shop for meat? What else can we be doing to encourage all suppliers to provide more transparency into the sustainability of their practices? Thanks Great question - yes I totally agree its really hard as a consumer to find this information! The key information would be 'gCO2e' or 'grams of carbon dioxide equivalent' on packets - but this is not available for any meat packets that I know of at the moment. Please write to your supermarket and MP to ask them to provide mandatory accredited climate impact labelling (grams of carbon dioxide equivalent) available at the point of sale (e.g. on packets)!
GHG emissions from food constitute how much towards the overall GHG emissions? Aren't your efforts better spent finding out ways to prevent volcanoes from erupting (or other higher impact events) that can put out orders of magnitude more GHG at once? Food contributes about a quarter of all climate change. Most of the rest is fossil fuels. Volcanoes aren't a significant contributor e.g. see Myhre, G. et al. (2013). “Anthropogenic and Natural Radiative Forcing”. Climate Change 2013 – The Physical Science Basis: Working Group I Contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, United Kingdom and New York, NY, USA, 659. doi: 10.1017/CBO9781107415324.018.
Hey Professor! We recently watched Endgame 2050 on Prime Video. They're conclusion was that if "everyone" became vegan, then we'd stop climate change. My husband & I have already made it a point to eat less meat & have stopped buying & eating beef. But, we're not vegans. Our question after watching that documentary is... What happens to all the farm animals if "everyone" becomes vegan? I don't agree that if everyone went vegan we'd stop climate change because food causes about a quarter of all climate change. Most animals farmed intensively for meat production live for a maximum of a year or two

2020.10.15 19:14 ObiEff The homemade Chicken Shawarma manual, a guide to making the best home made chicken shawarma of your life using just a grill or broiler. Recipe inside

Reddit law dictates pictures first, so here's how my shawarma turned out. As usual if you'd like to support me or prefer video guides, here's the link to the recipe and technique. I've also linked to all my past cooking posts in the comments below.
The sight of a Shawarma spit rotating slowly while grilling is breathtaking and majestic. The meat slowly bubbles and fries up on the exterior, while melted fat and juices trickle down the assembled shawarma cone. Then like a trained violinist, the shawarma meister shaves the exterior of the cone into thin strips of grilled meat before wrapping it in some flatbread. It is a true site to behold, and the experience of eating shawarma that was shaved seconds before is one you'll likely never forget. So what is one to do when you have no shawarma shops nearby and the craving strikes. Well the answer is to make your own but the problem with that is it's near impossible to get the correct grilled flavor and texture without a rotisserie, that is until today. I'm going to show you how to make the best homemade chicken shawarma of your life, using a technique that I developed that requires no special equipment (except some skewers) and can be done in any grill or broiler equipped oven.

What is Chicken Shawarma

Shawarma is the name given in the Middle East to a dish of layered meat which is grilled on a rotating spit, it commonly comes in two forms; Chicken or Meat (either beef, lamb or a mix of both). It's served throughout the middle east with every country putting their own unique twist on the marinades and sauces that are used. For the most part shawarma is eaten as a sandwich, but it's also sometimes served with rice, on hummus or with a salad. The popularity of shawarma and it's appeal as a quick delicious street food has lead to it spreading all over the world particularly as a late night meal.
There are a number of international variants of shawarma such as Turkish Döner (this is actually the historical origin of shawarma), Greek Gyros, and Mexican Al pastor (invented by Lebanese immigrants to Mexico), though today we will be focusing only on Levantine (specifically Syrian and Lebanese) style Chicken Shawarma sandwiches. These sandwiches are put together using the freshly shaved chicken, Toum (Thick garlic sauce, see my last post for this, link in notes), salty pickled cucumbers and Shatta (Chilli sauce, also in my last post), all wrapped together in a thin stretchy flatbread called Saj. Some people opt to add in slices of Tomato, lettuce, French fries or potato chips (crisps) for additional flavors or textures, but I feel it's unnecessary and the shawarma sandwich can shine without them. Once wrapped in the bread, the sandwich is toasted on a panini press for a minute, to crisp up the exterior of the bread and seal the sandwich shut.
The issue with cooking chicken shawarma at home is that it's really hard to get the right texture without the assistance of a rotisserie. As the rotisserie spins, the meat cooks from the outside inwards, and attains a glossy grilled char on the outer surface. Once shaved you'll end up with pieces that on one side are perfectly juicy and tender soft meat, and on the other side are crisped and lightly charred with an amazing grilled flavor. That texture is essential for correctly made chicken shawarma, and unfortunately it's really difficult to get using most home cooking methods. Although the marinade adds the majority of the flavor to the dish, it won't taste or feel right without the grilled exterior.
The simplest method to use for home cooked shawarma is to cut your marinated chicken into strips and then pan fry them. It works in a pinch and will give you chicken strips that taste similar to shawarma, but I've found that this method doesn't give you any resemblance in terms of texture and crucially the meat is missing a charred/grilled flavor. Another method that is quite simple, is to grill whole chicken thighs or breast fillets (slices about 1 cm thick) in a griddle or grill pan, then slicing it into strips before serving. This will give you a better texture and some char, and is my preferred method if I'm in a rush. However the texture is still quite different from that of genuine shawarma and the reason for that lies in the direct contact the chicken pieces will have with the pan. It will cause the meat to cook a lot quicker on the outside than it will on the inside, so you'll end up with a larger variation of doneness across a cross section of the meat.
One strange technique I've seen a lot recently, involves stacking your whole chicken pieces on some skewers, and baking it upright in the oven. Although this might look closer to a traditional shawarma cone, it's absolutely illogical, as you have to bake the whole thing until cooked through to the center. Although well intentioned, this method will basically give you over done and dry outer edges with some browning, and a well cooked center with 0 color. So what can you do to get realistic shawarma at home?
My technique is designed to grilling steak in a restaurant setting, to ensure that we get a perfectly cooked center in our meat, while still ensuring we get a crispy grilled outside. We will use the grill or broiler function to obtain a nice crust and grilled flavor. First the marinated chicken is sliced into thin strips about 1/2cm or 1/4in thick, then its suspended between two skewers. The filled skewers are placed on the edge of a baking tray or dish so that the meat is suspended in mid air and isn't touching the base. The tray is then placed under the broiler or grill in the oven to cook and is rotated every few minutes until lightly charred and cooked through. This is the best technique I have found for cooking chicken shawarma at home, and it really does mimic that of rotisserie shawarma. The direct heat from the grill or broiler allows you to develop char and crispiness, without the meat constricting and shrinking as it would in a pan.

The origins of Shawarma is one of many stories and timelines, and has been claimed by many nations. The name Shawarma may have come from the Turkish word çevirme, which some sources say means turning, though my google-fu has said it means translation (technically this still is a form of movement). But all indicators do point to this being an ottoman food, and that's mainly due to its importance and stature in the countries that make up the former ottoman empire. One very important clue on its ottoman origins was discovered in the background of a painting from 1616 which the food historian Priscilla Mary Işın discovered and wrote about in her book 'Bountiful Empire: A History of Ottoman Cuisine'. It dates the rotation method of cooking kebab to at least the 17th century.
Shawarma is thought to have first gone vertical through the work of Iskender Efendi in the 19th century (1867 to be exact) in the city of Bursa. He is also the inventor of the Iskender Kebab, which consists of meat shawarma placed on a bed of bread, then topped with a tomato sauce, browned butter and yoghurt. His descendants still run a restaurant in the city of Bursa to this day. Speaking of vertical shawarma, nearly all shawarma is now cooked vertically, but over the past decade there has been a resurgence in horizontally cooked shawarma. This is usually done over a coal fire pit and is honestly one of the best things I have ever eaten.
The spread of shawarma through the rest of the middle east is not clear and there aren't any credible stories of how it got transformed into a sandwich nor how it came to be combined with Toum and Shatta. However given that Toum is very much a Levantine invention and is a main component of chicken shawarma sandwiches, it's likely that it spread from either Syria or Lebanon. One clue to the Syrian origins of Chicken shawarma sandwiches also lies in the stores that sell shawarma throughout the Arab world. One of the oldest shawarma stores in Egypt is called Abo Ammar El Sory, which literally means Ammar's Father - The Syrian. There are also lots of other Syrian joints that specialize in shawarma throughout Cairo, though I'm unsure if this is just a phenomenon in Egypt.
One thing that we can say for sure is that Shawarma has spread throughout the world over recent years, and this is mostly attributed to the rise in Syrian refugees opening restaurants in the countries they now call home. London, UK is home to dozens of these, some of which put out shawarma that can rival any I've had in the Middle East. Europe has been a hotbed for Turkish Doner Kebabs for a long time, but the shawarma sandwich is now posing a new challenge to their dominance.

Flavor Profile

The chicken shawarma itself has a mild but complex spiced flavor due to the varied amounts of spices in it. You can easily pick up the flavors of Bay, cloves, cardamom and turmeric. The paprika and tomato paste add some depth to the shawarma and much needed umaminess. Adding lemon and vinegar to the marinade give it acidity but at the same time they serve to tenderize the chicken in conjunction with the yoghurt. Once cooked the flavors in the marinade mellow down slightly and you also get the grilled flavor coming through. Finally the great thing about cooking the shawarma with this method, is that you are still able to taste the chicken itself.
As a sandwich, it has quite a great and well rounded flavor. The first flavor you notice is the grilled bread, which I think is a step that gets left out too often. The freshly baked flavor you get from toasting it is essential to the shawarma experience. The next thing that cuts through is the garlic sauce, with its strong and pungent garlic flavor. You then get the flavors of the chicken mixed with the salt and sourness of the pickles. It's very much a memorable experience eating real shawarma for the first time as the flavors all blend together so well. If you add some chilli sauce as well then you will get a background heat in your sandwich that is really pleasant.

For the Chicken Shawarma:

Sandwich Ingredients:

Marinade directions:

  1. Butterfly or pound your chicken thighs until they are 1/2 cm or 1/4 inch thick, even thickness is crucial for a great cook. If you are using chicken breasts then butterfly them and then pound to an even thickness
  2. Crush your bay leaves using a pestle and mortar or a spice grinder (you can use some of the salt to help with this), then add to a bowl with the remaining spices
  3. Mince your garlic and mix with the Yoghurt, Tomato Paste, Lemon Juice, Olive oil, white vinegar and the spice mix. Stir until well mixed and then add your chicken in to the bowl and mix to ensure each piece is well coated in the marinade
  4. Place your chicken in the fridge for a minimum of 12 hours so the marinade can really take effect

My oven grilled/broiled chicken shawarma technique:

I highly recommend checking out my video for this as the steps are kind of hard to translate into words
  1. Slice your marinated chicken thighs into strips about 1/2 cm or 1/4 inch thick
  2. Using a skewer, pierce your chicken strips all along one side and slide them onto the skewer until the entire chicken thigh has been threaded on to the skewer
  3. With a second skewer, pierce the opposite end of the chicken, so that the chicken strips are suspended between both skewers, it will kind of resemble crochet. Push the thigh together so it's slightly compressed then repeat until you have filled all your skewers. Leave about an inch clear on both tips of the skewer.
  4. Line a deep baking sheet with foil or dish with foil, then place the skewers across the edge of the sheet. Either end of the skewer should be resting on opposing walls of the baking sheet, with the meat suspended between them, floating above the sheet not sitting in it (you may need to use a deep baking dish if your trays are shallow).
  5. Place your tray in the oven with your grill or broiler set to medium and cook for 3-5 minutes. Rotate the skewers to the second side and cook for another 3-5 minutes. Place them back in the over for 2-3 more minutes until slightly charred. Cooking times will really vary with each broiler or grill, but you should basically flip when it starts to develop a sear then flip when it happens on the other side. Your chicken should read 74c or 165f when done. If your broiler or grill only has one strength setting, try rotating it more often such as every minute.

Pan Grilled directions:

  1. Heat a grill pan or griddle and place a few chicken thighs in it, but don't overcrowd the pan
  2. Cook them on medium high heat, flipping them every 2-3 minutes until cooked through, this should only take a few minutes
  3. Remove and let cool slightly before slicing into thin strips

To make a shawarma sandwich:

  1. Place a piece of bread on your work surface and slather on a couple of tablespoons of Toum
  2. Add your chicken pieces on top, as well as some pieces of sliced cucumber pickle
  3. Add some chilli sauce to the sandwich then roll it up and seal
  4. Place your sandwiches in a grill pan of griddle, and weigh them down with something heavy. Allow them to sear for 30-60 seconds per side until grill marks form. You may find that wrapping the sandwiches in greaseproof paper before grilling helps keep them from splitting open.

2020.10.15 11:20 Zako6655 TIFU! By Eating Not 1 But 2 Hot Dogs (Wieners).

(Sorry for bad English)
now some context I'm 12 and I love eating but I am surprisingly slimnow onto the story
So I was at home playing valorant on my computer when suddenly I realised that I had not eaten anything for the whole day. (It was a round 2 pm at the time.) I decided to eat the hot dogs that my dad bought. I went down stairs and I turned the stove on, got a frying pan and put two hot dogs on there (of course by hot dogs I mean wieners but I really hate how that word sounds) then I went to the store and bought some bread with the money my mom left me. Anyways onto the good bit I came back and saw that the hot dogs had grown twice there original size. I got a spatula and with the spatula I put them onto a plate. after that I ate them and went back to playing computer games.
(Caution please dont read this while eating)
anyways the next day I had diarrhea. Then after an hour of siting on the toilet my mom heard me suffering and she said:
Mom: "You shouldn't have eaten those hot dogs yesterday"Me: "How do you know I have diarrhea because of the hot dogs?"Mom: "because they have been spoiled for over a month!"
Then I realised that I never checked the expiration date and suffered for another hour.
Edit: The hot dogs were meant to be for my cats.
TL;DR :I made some wieners ate them then had diarrhea for 2 hours cause they had been spoiled for over a month.

2020.10.12 18:44 pehasof19 Best Prime Day Deals Reddit

Amazon Prime Day Deals 2020 Reddit , Amazon’s yearly deals bonanza for Prime members, is almost here, and it’s not too early to start pulling together your wish list. Last year’s mid-July event yielded some of the best prices we saw during all of 2019, and we expect to see the same quality of deals this year on October 13 and 14. Here’s a quick preview of the early deals we’ve found and a primer (see what we did there?) on what you can expect during Prime Day 2020.The best early Prime Day deals As Amazon’s deals bonanza draws closer, we’ve already begun to see some pre–Prime Day deals crop up on the site. Some of these early Prime Day deals have already come and gone, but don’t worry: Those that have disappeared will likely be back in time for Prime Day looking just as good or even better. Until then, here are the best early discounts we’ve spotted so far.
More details here
Amazon device deals Kindle Paperwhite deals After rounds of diligent testing, our guide writers have come to the conclusion that the Kindle Paperwhite is the best ebook reader money can buy—and, luckily for avid readers, we fully expect the Paperwhite to drop to $85 or less during Prime Day. Right now, we’ve found a bundled Pre-Prime Day deal that includes the Paperwhite, an Amazon leather cover, and a power adapter for $120. However, we don’t think this deal is that great, considering the case isn’t a Techbylight pick and most people will find the extra USB wall charger extraneous.
Audible 1-Year Subscription Deal price: $100; street price: $150
Kindle Unlimited (6 Months) Deal price: $30; street price: $60
Amazon Echo Show 5 and Echo Show 8 Deals Both the Amazon Echo Show 5 and the Echo Show 8 are Techbylight-approved smart displays that can serve many functions—they can act as alarm clocks, kitchen sous chefs, a way to spend time with your family virtually. We expect to see good deals on both the Show 8 and the Show 5 (which is just a smaller version of the 8) this Prime Day, and the Show 5 is actually on sale right now for $45 in a pre-Prime Day deal. For an extra $5, Prime members can also add the Blink Mini indoor security camera to their carts as part of that same promotion.
Amazon Echo Show 5 Smart Display Deal price: $45; street price: $75 Read our review of the best smart display for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
Amazon Echo Dot Deals The Echo Dot is the perfect choice for a beginner looking to dip their toe into the world of smart speakers. Affordable and compact, the Echo Dot gives you a surprisingly good sound for something so small, along with all the control and features of Alexa; for folks already entrenched in the Alexa ecosystem, adding another Echo Dot to another part of your home can extend your smart assistants’ range. We’ve already seen the price of the Echo Dot drop in the run up to Prime Day 2020—we found an exclusive Prime member deal that brought a two-pack of Dots down to $40. Unfortunately, that deal has already expired, but we’ll likely see the price of Dot drop again during Prime Day proper.
Amazon Music Unlimited 4 Months for $1 Deal price: $1; street price: $32
For details
Echo Auto Deals The Echo Auto is a way to add Alexa to your vehicle. Available for $20 as part of a pre-Prime Day promotion, it claims to allow you to use your voice to play music, check the news, make calls, add to your to-do list, or manage your calendar. We don't recommend the Echo Auto, as per Techbylight Senior Editor Grant Clauser: "It's an interesting concept, and is nice when it works, but it frequently doesn't."
Blink Mini Indoor Camera The Blink Mini is Amazon’s new security camera, and, as part of a Pre-Prime Day deal, can be added on to an Echo Show 5 purchase for $5 extra. Compact and light, this small indoor security camera (which sells for $25 on its own) claims to offer motion detection, night vision, and Alexa capabilities. Techbylight does not recommend the Blink Mini for a few reasons, the biggest being its tendency to overlook motion along with its recording limitations. “It missed some events completely during testing and limits recordings to 30 seconds, with 10-second gaps in between captured clips,” says smart home senior staff writer Rachel Cericola. “And while that may not seem like a lot, it means every time there’s 90 seconds of movement, you’re missing a third of that.”
Blink Minis purchased now come with a free trial of the Blink cloud storage subscription through the end of December 2020—but once the year is over, you’ll be required to subscribe to the monthly service if you want the camera to make and save recordings, and Rachel says there are far better options for that (which we recommend!).
Kitchen deals We’ll see deals on small kitchen appliances, including favorites from OXO and Instant Pot. Historically, the Instant Pot has been one of the star deals of Prime Day—we’ve seen deals that have taken it to as much as 50% off. Expect to see deals on coffee makers, as well, with our top pick, the OXO Brew 9 Cup Coffee Maker, likely to be well discounted. One caveat: Small kitchen appliance deals are trickier this year than on previous Prime Days, as the coronavirus pandemic has driven tremendous demand for some sought-after products and brands. Since March, for example, we haven’t seen the KitchenAid stand mixer deals we usually see with some regularity, and that’s largely true of our best blender picks, as well.
All-Clad D3 Stainless 12″ Fry Pan with Lid Deal price: $100; street price: $125 Read our review of the best skillet.

OXO Good Grips Spiralizer Deal price: $32; street price: $40 (use code FALL) Read our review of the best spiralizer.
OXO Steel Salad Spinner Deal price: $38; street price: $50 (use code FALL) Read our review of the best salad spinner.
For details
Rubbermaid Brilliance Pantry Food Storage Containers (24-Piece Set) Deal price: $28; street price: $40 Read our review of the best dry food storage containers.
Apple deals In the past few years, Prime members have also been able to nab deals on select Apple products. We expect to see discounts on the Apple Watch Series 5 if it remains available after the recent release of the Series 6 and Apple Watch SE, but keep an eye on our Apple Watch review, as the SE might be a better option (pending testing) for anyone who doesn’t need the ECG feature. The 8th-generation iPad has been just recently released, if you want the latest and greatest, and while we may not see huge discounts, initial discounts may appear. The 3rd-generation iPad Air may be worth your while if it’s cheap enough, as it too got a September refresh and the 4th gen is now available. We also expect to see MacBook Air and Pro models discounted to match previous sale prices in 2020. The previous-generation iPad Pro could be discounted, too, a tablet that our resident Apple expert, senior staff writer Nick Guy, still considers a great value if the price is right.
Apple iMac (27-inch, with Retina Display) All-In-One Computer Deal price: $1,650; street price: $1,750 (10 gen intel core i5, Costco Members only) Read our review of the best all-in-one computer.
Apple MacBook Air (13-inch, 2020, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, Space Gray) Deal price: $1200; street price: $1300 Read our review of the best MacBooks.
Apple iPad mini (5th generation, 64 GB) Deal price: $336; street price: $385 Read our guide to why the iPad is the best tablet.
Will the release of the Apple iPhone 12 affect Prime Day deals? Apple has a product announcement event on October 13, the first day of Amazon Prime Day. It's widely expected that the company will announce the iPhone 12 lineup, though actual availability dates are still unknown. For right now, Deals team has the feeling that the timing of this release might mean some deals on the iPhone 11 (our current top pick)—perhaps gift card or BOGO deals rather than price drops. You’ll probably want to pass if you’re an Apple aficionado with eyes for the latest and greatest tech, but if you want to save a few bucks on an iPhone that our guide writers love, this could be a good time to pick one up.
Vacuums on Prime Day Vacuums are almost certain to see great prices during Prime Day, but some vacuum types in particular (robot vacuums from Eufy and Roomba and cordless stick vacuums from Dyson) have historically had the best Prime Day deals. Last Prime Day, we saw the Eufy Robovac 11S, our budget pick, drop all the way down to $150. Shoppers will have a variety of options to choose from, as we expect multiple models robot vacuums and cordless stick vacuums to be heavily discounted. For the best deals, keep an eye on all retailers, not just Amazon—vacuums at Walmart typically see good discounts, too, especially on Dyson vacuum refurbs and Roombas.
Upright and canister vacuum sales are also a possibility, as we usually see at least one worthwhile Prime Day discount on our top pick from Shark. Even handheld vacuums have been the subject of Prime Day deals in previous years, so we’re likely to see vacuum discounts for every vacuum category covers.

Gaming deals When it comes to PlayStation and Xbox, the deals will essentially be for the last-gen consoles due to the impending release of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. If you’re okay with last-gen technology, however, you’ll enjoy the best pricing we’ve ever seen for the older consoles, but we only recommend that you grab the Xbox One S or standard PS4, as you’ll overpay for the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X. Note that PS4 controllers won’t work on PS5 games, though Microsoft claims that all Xbox accessories save Kinect will be compatible with the Series X and Series S.

The Nintendo Switch hasn’t seen any deals at all since very early in 2020, and we don’t expect to see any deals during Prime Day. In fact, since March it has been rare to find the slightly refreshed new Switch model (which offers longer battery life) available even at full price. Deals on the Nintendo Switch Lite are slightly more likely, as inventory is more steady. We will, however, likely see deals on recommended Nintendo Switch accessories such as the Switch Pro controller or charging accessories.

Fitness deals As the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact gymgoers, quality home fitness equipment continues to experience high demand, which means its unlikely we’ll see deals in this category. Our top adjustable dumbbell pick, the Core Home Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell Set, has been sold out at reliable sources for months. Even large and expensive fitness gear like our treadmill picks and the Peloton bike are experiencing stock issues and shipping delays as shoppers attempt to duplicate their gym experience at home. At this point, we’d be happy to see many of our fitness picks in stock at all, and we’ll do our best to highlight these items if they become available.
We are currently searching for the best deals on picks in this category and will add them here if we find them!
Prime Day TV deals Amazon Prime Day has historically offered deals on budget and ultra-budget TV models doesn’t recommend that use Amazon’s own Fire TV interface, but in recent years we’ve seen more variety in the types of TV deals available. For instance, the newest TCL 6-Series line, our new top LCD/LED pick, could see some discounts, but Amazon Prime Day TV deals on Sony TVs are less likely, so new picks like the Sony X950H (for those seeking a wider viewing angle) will probably stay at full price. Finally, in 2019, we noted Amazon Prime TV deals that included bonus gift cards for our OLED pick, and hope to see similar deals for the newer LG CX, which will almost certainly be our new OLED TV pick.

Laptop deals Historically, we haven’t often seen great deals on laptops or computers during Prime Day, and we expect that to hold true this year, too. We’ve seen small deals on MacBook Pro laptops and some configurations of the MacBook Air recently which will likely stick around through the duration of Prime Day. We don’t expect to see too many deals from Amazon on Windows Ultrabooks, either, but that won’t stop us from keeping an eye on other retailers. The best Prime Day laptop deals we’ll see this year—if any—will likely be on Lenovo branded laptops, either through Lenovo itself or through Best Buy. Deals on Chromebooks, even small ones, will be very rare this Prime Day—so if you do see one, nab it while you can!
In past years, we’ve seen a few good Amazon Prime Day computer monitor deals, but because of the pandemic, those too have been in short supply. Though we’re starting to see a few monitor deals crop up again, they’re usually on our budget or upgrade models, rather than our top or runner-up picks (which are still out of stock). In the run-up to Prime Day, we’ve also seen a few price drops on variations of our top mini PC pick, the HP Prodesk 600 G5.
Dell U3419W Ultrawide Monitor & $100 Dell Gift Card Deal price: $648; street price: $770 (use code STAND4SMALL, $100 Dell Gift Card) Read our review of the best ultrawide monitors.
Baby and kid deals Prime Day features a number of deals for kids, some of which are picked by Techbylight. Notably, we expect it to include some STEM toys we recommend in addition to bath, beach, and sandbox toys from Green Toys made from recycled materials. Gear for those with younger kids could well see deals too, with baby carriers, strollers, and car seats often available at a discount.

Whole Foods, small business, and other early Amazon promotions On October 13 and 14, Prime Members will get an extra $10 for every $40 put on an Amazon eGift Card. From now until October 12, Amazon is offering Prime members a $10 credit to use on Prime Day when members spend $10 on items sold by select small businesses. From now until October 14, Prime members can spend $10 at Whole Foods Market online or in-store to get $10 to spend on Amazon during Prime Day. Prime members who spend $10 in an Amazon Go store through October 14 get $10 to use during Prime Day. Prime Members can use the QR code in the Fresh In-Store section of the Amazon app to get $10 to use on Prime Day when they spend $10. Use your Prime account to spend $10 at checkout at an Amazon Books or Amazon Pop Up, and you get $10 to use during Prime Day. Whole Foods promotions overall may be less robust than those of prior years and geared toward online purchases, but we’ll note any additional promotions we see as Prime Day approaches.
What time does Prime Day start? This year, Amazon Prime Day will be held on October 13 and 14. The event will begin at midnight Pacific Time, that's an early 3 a.m. Eastern Time wake-up call for dealseekers. CNET previously reported that Amazon Prime Day would begin October 13, but until late September Amazon had confirmed only that it planned to hold Prime Day in the fourth quarter of 2020. As CNBC previously reported, during the summer Amazon provided sellers with the week of October 5 as a placeholder date. The retailer has typically held Prime Day during the second week of July, so this delay has pushed the event back by roughly three months.
Buy on Amazon Prime Day or wait? Because Prime Day was delayed by three months this year, you may be wondering whether you should capitalize on Amazon’s deal pricing now or wait for the upcoming holiday sales—Black Friday and Cyber Monday are only about a month away, after all. Here are the products we think you should buy now, and what we think will see even better pricing in just a few weeks.
Robot vacuums. We’ve always seen great deals on robot vacuums (like Roombas and Eufys) on past Prime Days, and we expect the same to be true this year. Robot vacuum deals will be around on Black Friday too, but we think you should buy now to avoid potential shipping delays around the holidays. Air purifiers. Last year we saw exceptionally good deals for air purifiers during Prime Day, but this year, we expect to see fewer deals and smaller discounts as wildfires have driven up demand—so if you see a deal on any of our purifier picks, snag it! Noise-cancelling headphones. This year’s Prime Day will almost certainly offer deals on all our noise-cancelling picks, whether you’re looking for over-ear headphones or our favorite earbuds. We have a feeling we’ll see the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, our top pick, sell for $300 or less, and the Anker Soundcore Life Q20, our budget pick, for $40 or less; we’re pretty sure the 1More Dual Driver ANC Pros, our top noise-cancelling earbud pick, will drop to $110, and the Jabra Elite 85H is likely to fall to less than $200. Canister vacuums. We expect to see some solid deals on powerful canister vacuums like our Shark picks in the NV350 and NV360 line this Prime Day, so if you spot a deal in your price range, pounce on it! Apple Watch. Whether you’re looking for deals on dwindling 5th generation Apple Watch models or like the already-budget-friendly SE, Prime Day will likely deliver. We think we’ll see great deals on select 5th gen models now that the Apple Watch 6 and SE have been released—but act fast if you spot a discount, since stock may be low. Just don’t fall for any “deal” on the Series 3; its technology will soon become obsolete. Nintendo Switch, accessories, and games. Nintendo Switch deals are far and few between, so if you happen across one, snap it up! Deals on Switch accessories and games will be a bit more ubiquitous this Prime Day, and we think you should capitalize on those discounts too if you find them. Wait on it
iPads. Though we’ve already been seeing the price of the 8th generation iPad (which happens to be our upcoming top pick) drop by $30, but we think the deals will be better come Black Friday. However, if you happen to see the price fall by more than $50, you should definitely snag the deal. We’ll probably see a few deals for the 7th generation iPad, but we think you’ll get more bang for your buck by investing in the newer model, which has a better processor—so skip the discounts for the 7th gen. Outdoor security cameras. We think there will be better discounts on a wider range of outdoor security camera brands we pick closer to Black Friday, so if you can wait, you should. Unsurprisingly, Amazon prioritizes deals on its own branded items, so it’s likely we’ll see mega discounts on Ring cameras, but Techbylight doesn’t recommend them. Gaming console bundles and games. Hold off until Black Friday if you’re on the hunt for new gaming consoles or game bundles; the deals will almost certainly be better. You should also wait until late November if you’ve got your eye on early PS5 and XBox Series X titles. Stick vacuums. Though we’ll likely see Dyson stick vacuums on sale from Prime Day through Black Friday, we expect to see slightly better quality deals across a variety of models closer to the holidays..

What can we expect from Walmart, Target and Best Buy? Amazon competitors are certain to have sales that run concurrently with Prime Day, but some also have a history of starting sales before Prime Day. Savvy buyers can take advantage of those early sales to save on things that may sell out quickly on Prime Day itself. Here’s what we know so far about early sales, as well as sales that will happen during Prime Day, at Amazon competitors.
Best Buy Early Black Friday Deals Best Buy has now formally announced that it will be running a sale of its own concurrent with Prime Day on October 13 and 14. This is a slight departure for them, as Best Buy has a history of preempting Amazon Prime Day with discounts of its own, and prior to Prime Day and Black Friday of 2019, we noted sales from Best Buy that approached and even matched pricing we saw during the deals mayhem later. Best Buy is framing this event as a preview of its Black Friday event, so we look forward to seeing what it includes.
Walmart Big Save event Walmart’s Prime Day–competing sale event, called the Big Save event, started last night at 7 p.m. Eastern. Walmart has historically followed Amazon’s lead and run its sales concurrent with Prime Day, but the company seems breaking with that history this year. As part of this event, the Roku Streaming Stick Plus is discounted to $37, the lowest we've seen it this year—although Amazon has already matched that drop. The emergence of Walmart+, which launched September 15, could also mean deals with membership or a free trial. Though we haven’t seen any sales or savings exclusive to Walmart+ just yet, we’ll still keep our eyes open. Regardless, we expect Walmart to match much of Amazon’s Prime Day pricing when the event goes live (pricing that folks will be able to take advantage of without a Walmart+ membership), so Walmart could be an option if you don’t want to shell out for Prime (or get a free Prime trial). Amazon items and brands aren’t available at Walmart, however, so if you’re looking for those things, Amazon or Best Buy will be your best bet.
Target Deal Days We saw Target expand its efforts to compete with Prime Day with its Deal Days promotion in 2019, and Target has now announced it will be doing the same in 2020 with a Deal Days promotion that will run concurrent with Prime Day. At the very least, we expect Target to match some of the better Apple deals out there. The most notable benefits of shopping at Target versus Amazon are the possibility of store pickup (if that appeals to you) and the presence of Target’s RedCard 5% discount and promotions. Although 5% isn’t a huge amount, it becomes significant on large purchases. Additionally, Target frequently offers RedCard-exclusive promotions—while those haven’t been overwhelmingly good during Prime Day events and Black Fridays past, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them more this year.
Amazon Prime Day shopping tips and tricks Prime Day shopping can feel overwhelming, but we’ve compiled some tips to help you get the most out of the event.
Comparison shop: Many Amazon competitors are going to offer competing sales during Prime Day. The Walmart Big Save event, Target Deal Days, and Best Buy's early Black Friday sale will be in full force. We’ll be looking out for deals that originate with them or Amazon price matches. You should, too, particularly if you have a cash-back card or belong to a program that saves you a little extra (like Target’s RedCard). Use third-party price trackers: Techbylight uses a combination of internal and third-party price-tracking tools to monitor price history, but Deals editor Nathan Burrow is still partial to CamelCamelCamel, which tracks Amazon pricing. It’s free to use, and although it’s imperfect, it provides some directional data that can at least set you on the right path. Consider Amazon’s Wishlist, Watch, and Waitlist tools: We know that’s a confusing mouthful. Wishlist allows you to curate items you’re already interested in. Watching an item is a tool you can use to flag upcoming deals during Prime Day and get alerts via the Amazon Shopping app when those deals go live. Waitlist is a tool you can use when you’ve missed a Lightning Deal—if someone else fails to follow through and purchase the item after adding it to their cart, you might be able to claim it. Ask Alexa: If you already have an Amazon smart device and want to ask Alexa about Prime Day deals, say “Alexa, what are my Prime Day deals?” In past years, we’ve even seen early-access deals for Alexa users. Using the Amazon app and the Amazon browser extension to find deals Last year, we saw a number of app-exclusive deals that you couldn’t get on a laptop, so it might be worthwhile to download the Amazon iPhone or Android app. During the event, you can use the app to track your favorites as you shop and keep an eye out for upcoming Lightning Deals available for preview. Once you claim a Lightning deal, you have a limited amount of time (15 minutes) to pull the trigger and complete the purchase before your claim expires. Turn on push notifications in the Amazon app to increase your chances of grabbing a Lightning Deal on an item you’re watching before it goes out of stock.
Three sections to note before Prime Day:
“Get Ready for Prime Day” banner: New for 2020, this allows you to subscribe to get deal notifications about select items on Prime Day. The suggested items appear to be served based on your shopping preferences, and if you opt in, you’ll receive deal notifications at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Prime Day. “Start shopping early” banner: Here you’ll find pre–Prime Day promotions such as Amazon’s $50-off deal for Audible. “Get Prepped for Prime Day” section: View tutorials showing some of the features of the app, such as how to “watch” an item—a helpful trick to make sure you can grab upcoming Lightning Deals on Prime Day. This year the Amazon Assistant browser extension is seeing expanded functionality. The Amazon Assistant helps you compare while browsing and easily add an item (even non-Amazon items) to a wishlist, and it also makes personalized product recommendations. The browser extension also allows you to get alerts in your browser for items you’ve watchlisted on the app in addition to delivery updates, a nice feature if you’re switching between your phone and computer.
Lightning Deals on Amazon Prime Day To get a Lightning Deal on Prime Day, first and foremost you’ll need to be a Prime member. You can grab a free 30-day trial in advance of the event or join on a more permanent basis for $119 per year if you’ve decided to make the leap. Students are eligible for a special $59-per-year rate. You’ll also need to be quick to click that buy button—as their name suggests, Lightning Deals are designed to go quickly and to create a sense of urgency. If you miss out, though, never fear. You can add yourself to a waitlist for Lightning Deal items you may have missed out on—if some percentage of the “sold out” item never goes all the way through checkout, you’ll get an alert, and you may be able to snap one of those remaining units up if they become available.
We’ve also noted a trend of Lightning Deals ending and then coming back on day two of Prime Day, something to keep an eye out for. Finally, you can also add items you have your eye on to a wishlist via an “Add to List” button right next to where the “Add to Cart” button is located. You can even adjust your settings to get push notifications on your phone via the Amazon app for these items when and if they become available as Lightning Deals.

2020.10.12 01:29 MC_BennyT Wendy's fucked up my order three times.

I like going to Wendy's. I've never had any problems ordering food at my local Wendy's. Until today.
I often order the crispy chicken sandwich biggie bag ($5) which includes the chicken sandwich (I like to add tomato, onion, and pickle), small fries, 10-piece chicken nuggets with 2 sauce packets (I usually get barbecue), and a small drink (Diet Coke). Because of COVID, I've been exclusively placing mobile orders. This time, I order this biggie bag plus a junior bacon cheeseburger on my way to work so I can eat before my shift and have stuff leftover for lunch.
I drive up, say I placed a mobile order, and move on tot he second window. Someone tries to hand me a large fruit punch and I say it's not my order. They take it back and hand me a bag that seems like the right size for my order but I look inside to find a receipt with someone else's name and an order entirely different from mine. I hand it back saying it's definitely not my order. I can tell this girl at the window is new and/or incompetent.
Someone else comes to the window and asks me what my order was. I tell it was a biggie bag and a junior bacon cheeseburger. Apparently, somewhere along the line, someone deleted my order from their screen. Ugh.
This girl hands me one more bag that is the right size and tries to tell me to have a good day without handing me my drink. Wow, I actually have to ask for my fucking drink. I get my drink and I'm just glad the bag looks like the right size that I peel out without looking inside because I'm about to be late for work. I get to work, park, and look inside to find they gave me spicy chicken nuggets instead of regular, sweet and sour sauce packets (I think their sweet and sour sauce is gross), and they forgot to give me a junior bacon cheeseburger.
Since they deleted my order from the screen, I'm fairly certain they just threw together whatever they had at the moment to complete a crispy chicken sandwich biggie bag. I also take a look at my chicken sandwich and yep: it's just a plain chicken sandwich with lettuce and mayo. No tomato, onion, or pickle like I had ordered. I already have to be at work in a few minutes, so I can't drive back and ask for my actual order. Since they just slapped it together, they didn't even give me a receipt. So, I can't even complain by going to the survey link on the back of the receipt. I tried to search for the survey site but you need the restaurant number, date, and time as it would appear on a receipt and I don't know the restaurant number off the top of my head. The Wendy's app doesn't even tell you.
So, they tried to give me two orders that belonged to other customers. They finally gave me my order but it was wrong on every level and had an entire item missing along with the receipt. I got jerked around, risked running late, and paid for something I never got.

2020.10.11 15:38 Louey7 (LOTRO Basics) October 2020 Update - New Guides, Status, and WIP

I thought I would share this here in case anybody was maybe unaware of my website, LOTRO Basics. I have started something new to give status updates and share any new guides or information I have with LOTRO and guides. Here is the October 2020 Update -
For you all, I will give a not-as-well-formatted version of it here! As a note, a lot of the new stuff is an update on my own guides which are generally oriented towards newecasual players rather than those already raiding/etc. Any feedback is appreciated!

Of note:
  • All class pages have been updated and I have searched for and added any new guides I have come across.

New Guides

All of these guides can now be found on the class pages.
New Original Guides (all can be found in the playlist:
New External Guides
New Resources
Trait Planner -
"I Love Fried Orc (and you should too) Lotro Trait Planner" - a new and up-to-date class trait planner (U27.2, last checked on 2020/10/11)!
LotroBuilder -
- A new site with a database of gear in LOTRO, with current options to search by name. More info here.
If you have found any great resources or guides that I did not add here, please share them and I will update the list!

Status Update

Since returning to YouTube, I have refocused my time there, but I am still maintaining this website and the database of class guides! Recently, I have updated the class pages, which can be navigated to through that link or in the top banner on this site. Typically, I try to update those at least monthly or when I find a few good resources to add. This month, I decided to try something new - do a sweeping update of those and make a monthly status update post. For original text guides on this website, I have loose plans to make more 7 Class Tips guides once I finish making video versions of the classes I have already covered on this website. After that, there is more I want to do, but cannot guarantee anything due to time constraints and my focus being on YouTube (which would ultimately get shared here). Again, I will be maintaining this website even if no original new text guides are added!

Work in Progress

Most of my WIP list is for YouTube (for this website, this post was the only thing on the list!). I still have a massive project being worked on, which is filling in my new guide format with actual guides (all of this will be talked about in my next guide, expected Oct 12, 2020):
Class guides I have solid plans for:
  • A detailed guide on each specialization with covering:
    • starter build (leveling)
    • trait analysis
    • gameplay
  • A 7 tips class guide which has the goal to generally improve your experience on the class
  • A guide overviewing building for the class with stats, gear, equipment, and virtue traits. Note*:* this style of guide may be split into two videos. The upcoming Warden guide will have all of this in one video, but the next one I will test splitting it into two, with virtues being its own guide!
  • (Planned only): A guide covering basics of gameplay and gameplay mechanics as it applies to all specializations, and then give an overview of each specialization and some of the gameplay emphases.
Class guides I have loose plans for:
  • A general introduction to the class that would cover:
    • what the class is about
    • their class fantasy
    • what role they serve in the game
  • A legendary item guide for each class - note: this is not something I am immediately planning on doing, especially with a legendary item revamp on the horizon.

Virtual TutorCon 2021: Creating—Who We Are, What We Seek, and How We Help
Friday, March 5th& Saturday, March 6th, 2021
Hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno Writing & Speaking Center

Conference Theme
In this new world of COVID-19, masks, social movements, and Zoom appointments, we ask ourselves as writing consultants/tutors, writing center administrators, theorists, and practitioners several questions: Who are we? Who do we want to be? How do we help? What does “help” look like for us?

At the edge of a new frontier for writing support and as modern-day pioneers, we must decide what we want our identities to be, what principles will guide us, and what we want our actions to be moving forward. So, TutorCon 2021, invites proposals for individual presentations, workshops, round table discussions, group games, and gallery submissions that address how you and/or your center are creating who you are, what you seek, and how you help.

While TutorCon 2021 will be held virtually, we implore you to see that as an opportunity rather than as a constraint. Let’s push the boundaries of online interactions!

Types of Conference Submissions
Creativity in conceptualizing, planning, and delivering is welcomed, as well as dreaming big and being descriptive about your presentation. Types of conference submissions may include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following listed below.
· Individual presentations (25-minute sessions to include presentation and Q&A)
  • Workshops (75 minutes)
  • Round table discussions (50 minutes)
  • Group games (20-80 minutes)
  • Gallery submissions, such as recorded poster presentations, short films, recorded meditations, recorded writing center overviews.
